Details about the Feb 10th DMSFS meeting & Dinner Night will be posted later.  I just wanted to get the info about the Chili Cook Off out to you all.

We are indeed having what I hope becomes an annual event, the DMSFS Meeting and Chili Cook Off Night!  The event will be at the Walker-Johnston Shelter House in Urbandale. The night will start as usual with the Officer's Business Meeting at 6:30pm with the regular club meeting at 7pm.  After that, time for chili!

Bring you favorite chili, whether it's mild, spicy, firehouse, makes Satan cry for mercy, or Klingon-strength!

Just a few things to note about the chili cook off:

Please cook your chili ahead of time and bring it to the meeting to be reheated. We're a collective hungry beast and want to start sampling chili as soon as possible!

Please bring an ingredient list for your chili as a courtesy for those will food allergy issues.

The club will provide bowls, napkins, and plastic silverware, as well as power strips and extension cords.

Tammy & Jon Mohning are donating soup crackers & shredded cheese, Sheril Harper is donating chips, and Chamber of Champions is donating cornbread.

Since chili is the dinner and if you are not a chili fan, please feel free to bring your own dinner to the meeting.

While we're not planning on this cook off being a chili contest, no objection will be raised if everybody picks favorite chili.

We are looking into the logistics of bringing the club pop machine up the the meeting.

The entertainment portion of the night, besides the cook off, will be games, so bring your favorite card, board, or tiled games.

We have Walker-Johnston from 5:30pm to 10:30pm. You can come anytime after 5:30 but be prepared to be drafted to help set up tables and chairs. At 10pm we will call it a night and clean up the shelter house to be out by 10:30pm.

More details about the chili cook off will be announced and posted later as we get closer to February 24th.

Sad news, passing this along from the ICON crowd:

All -- Sad news tonight. From Gay: "Rusty passed away quietly at about 8 PM. No funeral is planned—he really didn’t like funerals—but there will be celebrations of his life at several conventions, I’m sure. Thanks for your support through all this."

Our love goes out to Rusty Hevelin and to his family, and to the Haldemans, and to the many friends and fans he has touched over his many years in fandom. He has been a dear friend and support to ICON, and he will be sorely missed. May his memory be a blessing to us all.

This year's New Year's Eve Party and SACC will begin at 7 pm on Friday, December 30th and run through Sunday evening, January 1st., at the Roth home: 1304 20th Street, West Des Moines. The garage will again be set up as a walk in cooler, so please bring food, snacks, and drinks to share. If you'd  like to organize a meal on either Saturday or Sunday, please let Les know. Because the party is relatively short this year, friends of all ages will be welcome throughout the weekend. Expect the usual collection of visiting, board games, and watching football. Please dress in your formal niceties on Saturday evening as we ring in the new year. If you would like crash space, please let Les know. Please contact Les if you have any questions or concerns.

From the DMSFS Facebook Page:

Update on Rusty. We had received an email from Gay Haldeman letting us know this and was waiting until after the holidays but we did not have his address. Leah Zeldes has done a wonderful post to let you know the latest.

Very sad news via the Cincinnati Fantasy Group: Rusty Hevelin is now in end-of-life hospice care at the VA Hospital in Dayton.

... "While his mind is still sharp, his body is shutting down and the pain medications are also taking a toll. How long will we have him? Days, probably; weeks, still possible," Michaele Jordan reports. "Visitors are welcome, though he may be sleeping or a bit drugged. He is in Room 140, 9th Floor, under James (Rusty) Hevelin. You could probably send cards there as well."
